Water Cooperation: Progress through Partnership

World Water Week is underway in Stockholm and this year’s theme is water cooperation, following on the United Nation’s call for 2013 as the International Year for Water Cooperation. For PepsiCo this is a perfect opportunity to highlight its comprehensive approach to water stewardship, including the key partnerships that help the PepsiCo Foundation provide access to safe water as well as the company’s operational successes to increase water use efficiency. Effective water stewardship is achieved through a variety of means but the goal is always the same: to use water responsibly. Transforming aspiration into reality demands engagement at every level. No single entity, program or organization has the resources or capacity to tackle this challenge single-handed. Reflections from World Water Week 2012

Last week, PepsiCo received the Stockholm Industry Water Award and announced that it reached its goal of improving global water use efficiency by more than 20 percent per unit of production – four years ahead of the original 2015 target date based on a 2006 baseline. We are proud of these accomplishments but we know there is more work to do. PepsiCo and Columbia Water Center: working together to increase efficiency in our supply chains

The theme of this year’s World Water Week in Stockholm is Water and Food Security, so discussions of PepsiCo’s work to conserve resources in agriculture are front and center. On Monday, PepsiCo and the Columbia Water Center (CWC) at the Earth Institute, Columbia University convened a panel titled Water and Energy Efficiencies in Food Supply Chains: Leveraging Partnerships.  We started the discussion by describing PepsiCo’s ReCon program, which focuses on identifying, quantifying, and prioritizing opportunities to conserve resources in our operating plants. We then devoted most of the session to the conservation challenges and opportunities in our agriculture supply chain.
